Davis Islands are man-made. In the 1920s, Davis Islands were built on top of two natural islands, Big Grassy Key and Little Grassy Key. The dredge and fill operation took mud from the bottom of Tampa Bay to create the islands. D. P. Davis undertook this project and purchased the land for $350,000. He envisioned a community with swimming pools, airport, golf course and hotels. The development stalled because of a cooling real estate market and Davis mysterious death in 1926.
