Hyde Park was home to one of the first non-native settlements in Tampa Bay. Fisherman from Cuba inhabited a portion of Spanishtown Creek. They named the area Spanishtown. Around 1886, O.H. Platt purchased around 20 acres of land in what is now Hyde Park and named it for his hometown in Illinois. Also in the 1880s, Henry B. Plant, the railroad financier, built the first bridge across the Hillsborough River on what is now Kennedy Boulevard. James Watrous built the first home in Hyde Park.
