Odessa was originally located in Pasco County. However, it now extends into northern Hillsborough per the USPS mailing area. Peter A. Demens, a Russian immigrant, named Odessa. He also named St. Petersburg. He named both cities after cities in Russia. In 1900, a post office was established at Odessa with Peter Strand as the first postmaster. The area was once known for a large sawmill. However, the sawmill burned in a fire in 1922. Odessa is now known for its open spaces, lakes and horse properties.
